The very first social economy inn in Québec, l'Autre Jardin is owned by Carrefour Tiers-Monde, an international solidarity organization which has been active for more than 35 years in the greater Québec area, vying for a sustainable, fair and dignified development for all men and women of this planet.

L'Autre Jardin is also a concept that emerged in 1996 at Jardin d'Antoine, a nice little hotel on St. Denis Street, in Montreal. Its owners, Mr Antoine Giardina and Ms Francine Gaudreault, were interested by an idea submitted by a Carrefour Tiers-Monde volunteer worker during a stay at their hotel. That idea, developing a three-star inn to guarantee consistent financing to Carrefour Tiers-Monde for its educational activities, did not fall on deaf ears. Through their expertise and judicious advice, the owners of l'Auberge le Jardin d'Antoine helped the growth of "another garden" in Quebec City.

Thanks to this concept, Carrefour Tiers-Monde can carry on its awareness campaigns to a larger audience, thus helping to build a world of peace, justice and friendship between the North and the South hemispheres.

Thus, in June 2000 l'Auberge took root at the very heart of the “Nouvo Saint-Roch”, in Québec, in a recycled, former industrial architecture building, built in 1919. The inn, with its distinctive Beaux-Arts style, was designed by architect Cajétan-L. Dufort (1868 - 1936), who also drew the plans for the Maisonneuve library in Montreal . The inn is different from regular hotels due to its status of social economy and, with its 28 rooms, is targeted for business and tourist clienteles.

In June 2002, inside l'Auberge l'Autre Jardin,  Boutique EquiMonde – owned by Carrefour Tiers-Monde – opens its doors, the first 100% fair trade boutique in Québec. The shop is a showcase for objects, clothing, and food items from various Third World countries.
